ReadPlusOne generates short Spanish stories using words you already know, plus a handful you don't yet. Reading through that gap is how your brain picks up a language.
His research showed that language is acquired, not memorized. When you understand most of what you read but encounter words just beyond your current knowledge, your brain picks them up from context.
Research puts the ideal comprehension rate at 95 to 98 percent. Below that, reading feels tedious, and above that is becomes ineffecient for learning new words. ReadPlusOne keeps every story in that range automatically, using your personal vocabulary as the baseline.
Answer a short vocabulary quiz so the app knows where you're starting from. Your first story will already be calibrated to your level.
Your story is written entirely in Spanish, with target words written into the story. You read as long as you normally would and mark any words that are unknown.
Any word you flag gets scheduled to reappear in future stories. Slowly overtime you will start to recognize the word and eventually it will be considered part of your known vocabulary.
